In this activity, students will use the ivory trade as a case study to learn how different levels of government work on global issues. They will write their own letters supporting changes to current legislation regarding the ivory trade.

In the first hour of this lesson, students will discuss the ideas of democracy and civil society. They will identify examples of times that society has demanded change throughout history. They will read an advocacy letter written by young people.

In the second hour, students will watch the film Battle for Elephants to understand threats to elephants in today’s world.

In the final hour students will discuss and debate the ivory trade. Based on their individual ideas, students will prepare an advocacy letter to their government in support of their views.
