This activity encourages students to think about the elements of an advertisement to create awareness of threats facing elephants. Through advertisement students can recognize the influence of photograph vs. print ads in advocacy for endangered species. After learning about threats to elephants world-wide, students will create an ad campaign to create awareness of this issue.

The first hour consists of introducing the subject of  “Disappearing Elephants” in Africa and Asia. It important that threats to both species are addressed, and discussion questions are used in the classroom to raise awareness. In this hour students should also view newspaper magazine advertisements so they can see examples of the techniques used to persuade and gather ideas for what they would like to do.

In the second hour students will create their own advertisements for an awareness campaign about elephant issues. Before students begin, teachers should go over the elements of a print advertisement, including choice of words, pictures, colors and lighting.
